Sharing Recipes
You can share any recipe with friends and family directly from the recipe detail page. Tap the Share button to open the iOS Share Sheet, where you can send the recipe via:
- Messages - iMessage or SMS
- Mail - Email
- AirDrop - To nearby Apple devices
- Any other sharing method your device supports
Shared recipes are sent as Schema.org JSON files - a widely-used standard format for recipes. Recipients who have Ressup can import the recipe directly. The JSON includes all recipe data, including photos, videos, and audio attachments.
Recipes you've shared appear in Settings > Shared by you, so you can keep track of what you've sent.
Ressup Community and Marketplace
When you set a real display name in Settings > Profile (not blank and not the placeholder Current User), the recipe Share sheet can include two extra actions at the bottom of the activity list:
- Post to Community - Copies the recipe JSON to the clipboard and opens reciperecorder.org in Safari for the Ressup Community submission flow. Finish the steps on the site (paste the JSON if the page asks for it).
- Post to Marketplace - Prepares the same recipe JSON with locked metadata added (required for marketplace listings), copies it to the clipboard, and opens recordedrecipes.com for the Ressup Marketplace flow.
Your display name and email live on your device until you submit through those sites; they are used to identify you as the cook when you publish. If you do not see these actions, open Profile and save a proper display name, then try Share again.
Site features and submission steps can change. Follow the instructions on the page that opens.
Export Formats
From the recipe detail page, tap Export to choose from several formats. If you changed servings on the detail screen, a Scale to … servings toggle lets PDF, HTML, shopping list, social text, and previews use the scaled amounts.
A print-ready document with your recipe title, ingredients, steps, and formatting. Perfect for printing or saving as a permanent reference.
HTML
A web-friendly file with styling. Useful if you want to publish your recipe on a blog or website.
Shopping List
A plain-text list of just the ingredients - ready to copy into a notes app, send via text, or print out before heading to the store.
You can also generate a shopping list by voice: say "Export shopping list" or "Create shopping list from recipe" to Siri.
Social Media Text
A formatted text snippet optimized for sharing on Instagram, Twitter/X, or other social platforms. Includes the recipe name, key details, and a clean layout.
Recipe File (JSON)
The native Ressup format. Exports the recipe as a Schema.org JSON file that can be shared with other Ressup users or imported later. This format preserves all recipe data including media attachments. For unlocked recipes you can optionally enable Export as locked so recipients import a non-editable copy.
WordPress Recipe Maker
Exports JSON compatible with the WP Recipe Maker plugin so you can import the recipe into a WordPress site that uses that plugin.
Menu Exports
From a Menu detail screen (see Tools, Menus & Shopping), use the toolbar menu to Export menu as PDF or Export menu as text. From the menu's aggregated Shopping list, share plain text, CSV, or PDF of combined ingredients.
Importing Recipes
Ressup can import recipes from Schema.org JSON format - the same format used for sharing and backups. There are two ways to import:
From the App
- Go to the Import Recipe screen (available from the menu).
- Either paste the JSON text directly or pick a file from your device.
- Ressup parses the data and creates a new recipe in your collection. Imported recipes appear in the Shared Recipes section (accessible from the menu).
From Sharing
When someone sends you a recipe JSON file from Ressup, you can open it to import the recipe into your collection.
Backup & Restore
Backing up your recipes is important - and Ressup makes it simple.
Creating a Backup
- Go to Settings, open Export Backup (Backup screen).
- Tap Save Backup File.
- Ressup creates a JSON file containing all your active recipes (for example
Ressup_Backup_2026-02-09_1430.json). - The Share Sheet opens so you can save the file to iCloud Drive, Files, email, or another destination.
- If the file is larger than about 200 MB, Ressup warns that Restore from Backup cannot import it. You can still save that file for archival outside the app.
Export Cookbook
On the same Backup screen, Export Cookbook saves only recipes marked Include in Cookbook in the editor (for example Ressup_Cookbook_2026-02-09_1430.json).
Restoring from Backup
- Open Settings > Export Backup.
- Tap Restore from Backup.
- Select a backup JSON file. Files over the app's restore size limit cannot be imported (export a smaller backup or archive oversized files elsewhere).
- Ressup imports recipes from the file. Existing recipes are not removed - imported recipes are added to your collection.
