Our Accessibility Philosophy
Ressup was built with accessibility as a core design principle — not an afterthought. Every screen, button, and interaction has been designed to be usable by everyone, regardless of ability. Whether you rely on VoiceOver, prefer larger text, or need to cook entirely hands-free, Ressup supports you.
VoiceOver
Ressup is fully compatible with Apple's VoiceOver screen reader. Here's what to expect:
General Navigation
- All interactive elements (buttons, links, form fields, pickers) have descriptive accessibility labels.
- Elements include accessibility hints that describe what will happen when you activate them.
- Navigation order follows a logical top-to-bottom, left-to-right flow on every screen.
- Category cards on the home screen announce their name and recipe count.
- Recipe lists announce the recipe name, difficulty, and time.
Recipe Editor
- All form fields are labeled (e.g., "Recipe title, text field").
- Ingredient and step lists announce item numbers.
- Pickers (unit, amount, time) are navigable with VoiceOver gestures.
- Delete and reorder actions are available via VoiceOver's rotor.
Cooking Mode
- VoiceOver announces the step number and instruction when each step appears.
- Timer status is announced (time remaining, paused, completed).
- Navigation buttons (Previous, Repeat, Next, Exit) are clearly labeled.
- Timer alarm completion is announced.
Dynamic Type
Ressup respects your system-wide text size settings. If you've increased the text size in iOS Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, Ressup's text scales up accordingly across all screens.
This includes:
- Recipe titles and descriptions
- Ingredient and step text
- Button labels
- Settings and menu text
- Cooking Mode instructions (which are already displayed in large text by default)
Reduce Motion
If you have Reduce Motion enabled in iOS Settings > Accessibility > Motion, Ressup will minimize animations and transitions throughout the app. This includes:
- Page transitions use simple fades instead of slides.
- Timer animations are simplified.
- Cooking Mode alarm uses a static indicator instead of a flashing overlay.
Siri Integration
Siri is a core accessibility feature of Ressup. The app's deep Siri Shortcuts integration means you can perform virtually every major action by voice:
- Create complete recipes conversationally
- Start and navigate through Cooking Mode
- Search for recipes
- Have recipe steps read aloud
- Export shopping lists
See the Siri & Voice Commands guide for the complete list of available commands.
Haptic Feedback
Ressup uses haptic feedback to provide physical confirmation of actions. This is especially useful when you can't see the screen:
- Light tap — Selections and navigation between steps
- Medium tap — Saving recipes, starting Cooking Mode
- Strong tap — Timer completion alerts
- Success pattern — Recipe saved, recipe shared
- Warning pattern — Validation errors
Color & Contrast
Ressup's color theme adapts to both Light and Dark modes with sufficient contrast for readability. Key information is never conveyed by color alone — text labels and icons always accompany color-coded elements like tags and difficulty indicators.
Accessibility Settings in the App
In Settings > Accessibility, you'll find information about Ressup's accessibility support and a link to open your iPhone's system Accessibility Settings directly, where you can configure VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, Reduce Motion, and more.
Tips for Accessibility Users
- Cooking Mode + Siri is the ultimate hands-free combination. Start cooking by voice and navigate steps without touching the screen.
- Back up regularly using Settings > Backup, so you never lose your recipes.
- If you have difficulty with the tap gestures in Cooking Mode, the on-screen Previous, Repeat, and Next buttons are always available as an alternative.
- "Read recipe steps" via Siri lets you hear a recipe from start to finish before you begin cooking.
Feedback
Accessibility is an ongoing commitment. If you encounter any barriers while using Ressup, or if you have suggestions for improvement, we'd love to hear from you at support@reciperecorder.com.
