What Is Cooking Mode?
Cooking Mode is Ressup's full-screen, step-by-step view for executing a recipe in a real kitchen. It shows one step at a time in large, readable text, runs automatic timers, and supports simple gestures and Siri so you can keep your hands on the food, not the glass.
Starting Cooking Mode
There are two ways to enter Cooking Mode:
- On screen: Open any recipe and tap the Start Cooking button.
- By voice: Say "Start cooking in Ressup" to Siri. If you've recently been viewing a recipe, Siri will start with that one.
Cooking Mode opens in full screen, hiding all other app UI so you can focus entirely on the recipe.
The Cooking Screen
In Cooking Mode, you'll see:
- Step number and total - e.g., "Step 2 of 8" at the top.
- Instruction text - The current step's instruction displayed in large, clear text.
- Step ingredients - If the step has specific ingredients associated with it, they appear below the instruction so you know exactly what you need.
- Step photos - If the step has photos or media attached, they appear as thumbnails you can view.
- Timer - If the step has a duration, a Start Timer button opens the countdown sheet.
- Navigation buttons - Previous, Repeat, and Next (or Finish on the last step) at the bottom of the screen.
Gesture Controls
The real magic of Cooking Mode is the gesture system. You don't need to precisely tap small buttons - just tap anywhere on the screen:
| Gesture | Action |
|---|---|
| Single tap | Move to the next step (or finish cooking on the last step) |
| Double tap | Repeat the current step (re-read it) |
| Triple tap | Go back to the previous step |
The step card reminds you: Tap anywhere: next · Double-tap: repeat · Triple-tap: previous. That matches the full-screen tap target behind the content.
Timers
When a step has a duration saved in the recipe, Cooking Mode shows a Start Timer button. Tap it to open the Cooking Timer sheet. The countdown starts automatically when the sheet appears. Siri can also open the timer when a step includes a duration (for example after starting cooking from a shortcut).
Inside the timer sheet:
- The remaining time uses large type; under one minute the digits turn red.
- Pause / Start and Reset control the countdown.
- When time reaches zero, an alarm plays, haptics fire, and a green flashing overlay appears. Tap the dimmed area to stop the alarm, or wait for it to stop automatically after about ten seconds.
- Use Done in the toolbar to close the sheet.
There is no always-visible countdown on the main Cooking Mode screen itself - only in the timer sheet.
Scaled Servings
If you changed servings on the recipe detail page before starting, Cooking Mode shows the scaled portion count and ingredient amounts follow that scale.
Finishing Cooking
On the last step, tap Finish or use a single tap on the full-screen gesture area. Cooking Mode closes and you return to the recipe detail screen.
You can leave early with the Exit toolbar button or by saying "Stop cooking" to Siri.
Haptic Feedback
Ressup uses gentle haptic feedback throughout Cooking Mode:
- Light tap when navigating between steps.
- Medium tap when starting Cooking Mode.
- Strong tap when the timer completes.
These haptics work even if your phone is face-down on the counter, giving you physical confirmation that your input was received.
